My unique path and abilities in interior design are deeply rooted in my history and background. My journey began in high school when my family, both graciously and with some apprehension, allowed me to plan and make selections for spaces in our home. However, it wasn’t until after I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Iowa State University, spent nearly a decade working in marketing, and experienced a pivotal moment in 2019, that I found my calling in interior design.

I was fortunate to attend Iowa State University, home to a renowned design college. At ISU’s College of Design, all students begin with the Core Design Program, a comprehensive first-year curriculum. Although I initially had entered ISU with sights set on interior design, the allure of graphic design captured my interest during that first year, and I applied and was accepted into the program. I quickly realized that I had a love for all-nighters, despite pretending otherwise.

In my third year, I secured an apprenticeship in graphic design at Traditional Home, one of my favorite interior design magazines. Under the guidance of the Editor of Photography, I honed my ability to edit interiors in print with a discerning eye, learning the importance of attention to detail. I witnessed the entire process, from photoshoots to photo editing in a dark room, to the final proof rounds. I also had the opportunity to attend interior design photoshoots, stage settings, and explore vast collections of swatches and samples at Meredith Corporation. The experience was an incredible learning opportunity that I cherish.

After graduation, I dove into the advertising world, working at agencies with clients like CarpetOne, Bobcat Company, and Miller. By early 2019, I knew I needed a change. The advent of surveillance and behavioral advertising had shifted the industry’s focus to manipulating consumer behavior, often without their knowledge. This shift left me feeling unfulfilled and disillusioned with my work.

By the end of 2019, I left my last marketing agency job and began exploring construction, interior design, creating detailed drawings and renderings, as well as building my own small projects. My partner Joe, a contractor, provided me with the tools (literal tools, lol) and advice I needed to learn and grow in this new field. In early 2021, I had the opportunity to showcase my skills on one of Joe’s projects, which led to a role with a design-build firm. There, I designed a showroom, built relationships with vendors, procured materials, created marketing content, and collaborated with other interior designers. These early experiences were invaluable, teaching me resilience, determination, and a passion for interior design.

In the fall of 2023, Joe and I took another leap. We left our jobs & started our own businesses — Van Woert Construction and Dana Van Woert Interiors. While we operate as separate entities, we collaborate as a team when a client’s needs align with our combined expertise. Our goal is simple: to design and build quality projects with our clients’ best interests at heart. It’s been a challenging and rewarding journey, and we are driven by our love for what we do, our commitment to quality, and our appreciation for our fantastic clients.
